Carsten has been around the sport of volleyball for 40 years. During his time in the sport, he was involved as head and assistant coach with Jr. Highs, High School, club teams, provincial teams as well as University teams. Further he was the founder of several new clubs and volleyball related businesses (Volleyball Position Camp & H.I.T.T. Volleyball).
During his coaching career he was able to commit to seven seasons with the Alberta Volleyball Provincial Team programs as head and assistant coach for midget and juvenile teams. Several of his teams placed in the medals and won National and Western Canadian championships. From 1992 until 1998, Carsten was an assistant coach with the University of Alberta PANDAS Volleyball team lead by head coach Laurie Eisler. Together they were able to celebrated the first three national championships of the eventually record breaking six consecutive titles.

- High School Varsity Coach for 22 seasons with women’s and men’s teams (numerous provincial appearances, many top three finishes and several provincial Championship teams)

- 2006 – U-14 Girls Head Coach at ELITE Volleyball Club (4th at Provincials & National Champions Div. 1/Tier 2)
- 1998 & 1999 – Senior Women Varsity Head Coach at W.P. Wagner School in Edmonton, Alberta (City Champions, Cuba Training camp)
- 1992 – 1996 – Senior Men’s Varsity Head Coach at W.P. Wagner School in Edmonton, Alberta (3rd place City Championships, Cuba training camp)
- 1991 – 1997 – PANDAS Volleyball Assistant Coach at University of Alberta in Edmonton (3 time National Champions 95′, 96′ & 97′)
- 1987 – 1997 – Provincial Team Coach at Alberta Volleyball Association, spent 7 seasons with the U-16, U-18, Canada Games teams women program and one with the Canada Games Men’s team (won several National and Western Canadian championships).
